A Vision Taken Flight
Tanya’s dream lives through every wing we rescue.

How We Began
A Family Chose Rescue
Ziggy’s Haven began with Ziggy, a beloved umbrella cockatoo whose loss left a lasting mark on one family. When Wendy and her husband considered bringing another bird home, their 15-year-old daughter, Tanya, urged them to rescue rather than buy. After speaking with another bird rescue, Tanya imagined something even bigger: a sanctuary their family could build together. She dreamed of becoming an avian veterinarian and promised that, if her parents led the rescue while she studied, she would one day return to carry it forward.
The Promise Her Family Carried
The Promise Her Family Carried
In October 2005, Tanya was killed in a car accident. Faced with the choice to close the rescue or continue, her parents chose to keep Ziggy’s Haven open in honor of both Ziggy and the daughter who gave the mission its purpose. What began as a small, home-based rescue grew through compassion, education, and the belief that every action can create change. Tanya’s vision became a lasting commitment to give parrots in crisis safety, stability, and another chance.
“Tanya’s vision lives on in every bird who finds safety, stability, and another chance.”
The Sanctuary Today A rescue Built to Last
The Sanctuary Today
Today, Ziggy’s Haven has grown into a 13-acre sanctuary and adoption facility, owned outright and mortgage-free thanks to a generous donor. The organization provides lifelong refuge for parrots in crisis, supports families who need help, and shares education that strengthens the bond between animals and the people who love them. More than two decades after the first promise was made, the mission continues: honor every bird’s individual story, protect those who need a safe place to land, and help write the next chapter with compassion.
